ASS carries things SubRip has no way to express — fonts, colours, karaoke timing, corner positioning — and a player that only reads SRT chokes on all of it. This reads the [Events] section, keeps every start and end exactly as written, strips the override tags in braces, and turns a hard line break into a real one. The file never leaves your browser.

What happens to the styling?
It is dropped, because SRT has no field for it. Colours, fonts, positioning and karaoke effects live in ASS override tags, and keeping them would just leave literal braces in the middle of your subtitles. The timings and the words come through untouched.
Does it handle .ssa as well as .ass?
Yes. SSA v4 and ASS v4+ list their Events columns in a different order — SSA opens with Marked, ASS with Layer — so the converter reads the Format: line and locates the columns by name instead of assuming positions. Both come out the same.
Is my subtitle file uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion happens in this tab: nothing is sent to a server, there is no account, and there is no queue. Converters that upload your subtitles make you wait minutes for what is, in the end, a plain text transformation.
