Japanese to English

Two ways to go from Japanese audio to English text, and which you want depends on whether you need the Japanese as well. Ticking "transcribe to English" gives you English in one pass on any plan, free included. Choosing English as a translation target instead gives you both documents — the Japanese transcript and the English translation, sharing identical cue timings — which is what you want for bilingual subtitles or when someone has to check the original.

よくある質問

Does it handle casual and polite Japanese?

Yes — plain, polite (masu/desu) and keigo speech are all transcribed, and the Japanese transcript comes out in normal mixed kanji and kana. Names and specialised terms are the spots to glance over in the editor.

Do I get the Japanese transcript too, or only English?

Your choice. "Transcribe to English" gives you English only, in one pass, on any plan. Choosing English as a translation target keeps the Japanese transcript and adds the English translation alongside it, with identical timings — that second mode is on the Max plan.

Can I make bilingual subtitles?

Yes. Both the Japanese and English come out timestamped, so export SRT or VTT for each and they line up on the same video. That is the usual reason to keep both rather than transcribing straight to English.
